Mornings smell of new beginnings. They promise hope and another chance at life. It spins a possibility to squeeze in maximum inspiration to kickstart the day. There are countless ways of making the most out of them and these three habits help me build a better life, one day at a time.

  1. Doing the seemingly insignificant things first

The first thing that I do after I open my eyes is make my bed. There is something cathartic about folding the bed sheets neatly, adjusting the mattress and fluffing my pillows before I proceed to arrange them. This orderliness makes me feel in control of my effort and time.

My subconscious finds comfort in doing just this simple task and this helps in setting the tone of my day. It is a quick 5-minute task which requires no expertise or skill, yet so fulfilling.

2. Waking up at a regular hour every morning

I am not a fan of “waking up when the sun rises” to bite success. My day job has me making amends to my working hours now and then and this also affects my sleeping schedule. So I had to set my own time and stick to it without feeling burnt out at the end of the day (no matter what time I actually started working).

Waking up at a specific hour made me feed my mind of structure. Raking in an adequate amount of time for a sound sleep also helps to plan the day in a more wholesome way.

3. Spending the first few hours with myself

For a long time, the first thing I would do was stretch out my limbs where I would instantaneously find my phone. I would then lay in bed spending an unknowable amount of time just scrolling past my social media before my eyes would even adjust to the light. This was a horrible way to start my day. After reading a lot on productivity and continuous self-introspection, I decided to reduce my screen time in the morning, slowly.

I started to consciously spend time with people and things that added value to my life — a morning conversation with my lovely mother while watering the plants, a long stroll with my 7- month old puppy, a 30-minute book reading session all by myself curled up in my room with my cup of tea.

There is something innately magical about mornings. Wrapped up as beautiful gifts they allow you to stay in the present and make the best out of them.

How do you start your new beginnings?
